Popular Lingerie Brand Under Sexual Harassment Allegations

Sexual harassment has plagued workplaces in the United States for decades, whether it be a small business or a fortune-making empire. Repeated and unwanted advances have been reported by more than 30 individuals involving the chief executive of L Brands. He was primarily responsible for selecting the brand’s “Angels” and was a close confidant to the L Brands founder, who is also under intense scrutiny for dismissing the accusations against the chief executive and allegedly participated in the same lewd behavior.
Dozens of employees have now come forward, alleging sexual harassment against both executives, and allowing the work environment of empowered men belittling weaker women, which is a staple in sexual harassment cases. Allegations included forceful kissing and touching, provocative suggestions, and unwanted advances. They also included demeaning and insulting employees, particularly women, and bullying and punishing those that complained or came forward.

The struggling lingerie brand has been under much scrutiny the past couple years, especially with the shifting ideals of society norms and gender roles. Victoria’s Secret has always been the mascot of promoting the unrealistic ideal body image for women, with stereotypes littering their ad campaigns and corporate vision. Their most recent fashion show had noticeably been canceled for the first time in decades. To combat this stigma, Victoria’s Secret hired a wider range of body types for modeling.
Other executives and employees tried to put Victoria’s Secret on a different path. In fact, a few had been forced out of the company. Since the revelation of these allegations, L Brands and Victoria’s Secret has denied their executives’ wrongdoings, but also reiterate that they are looking to better their image.
