NJ Female Police Officer Claims Sexual Harassment

Posted on

Cherry Hill employment lawyers fight for victims of workplace sexual harassment.A female police lieutenant claimed that she experienced sexual harassment and discrimination by the Middlesex Police Department. The victim claimed that she was frequently passed over for promotions and received inferior treatment from her male counterparts. The lieutenant alleged that she lost her position as head of the Traffic Safety Bureau due to discrimination and was told that she was transferred from her position because it was a man’s job. In the lawsuit, the victim claims that the police department ensured that leadership positions were exclusively fulfilled by men. Despite the allegations, the township denied the sexual harassment claims. In their released statement, the township claimed that it was against workplace discrimination.

Jobs that Have Higher Rates of Sexual Harassment

There are occurrences of sexual harassment in every job, however, there are jobs that tend to have higher rates of harassment than others. According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR), male-dominated jobs tend to have higher rates of sexual harassment. Police departments are historically known to be male dominated. Male-dominated jobs tend to have higher rates of sexual harassment, especially when the job includes tasks that are traditionally perceived as male-oriented, such as in the construction, welding, engineering, and medicine fields.

The Cost of Sexual Harassment and Discrimination

Sexual harassment has long-term affects related to a victim’s health and job status. Victims of sexual harassment often experience consequences to their mental health, including depression, anxiety, and even post-traumatic stress disorder. Similarly, victims often experience the inability to advance in their career. This could be due to several factors, including discrimination. Other times, those in charge might make an employee’s job status dependent on their performance of sexual favors.

There are clear consequences of sexual harassment for victims, however, it can also hurt a company. For example, employers might find that an office with frequent sexual harassment has a higher turnover rate, reduced productivity, and frequent legal battles. These consequences stem from the unfair treatment of employees. Therefore, it is in everyone’s best interest to report sexual harassment when it occurs. It is also important that victims consult with a sexual harassment lawyer to file a claim.
