The report by the TUC discusses specific cases of sexual harassment that LGBTQ individuals experienced at work. Seven out of 10 LGBTQ employees have experienced sexual assault at work. This report also states that many LGBTQ workers fail to report the assaults due to being afraid of judgement and lack of understanding from their superiors. The TUC is working to improve services for these individuals to ensure that sexual assault victims get the help they need. The TUC aims to reduce the number of sexual assault cases that occur and will continue to provide support systems for those who have and continue to face sexual harassment.
Training is Key
There are many ways that a workplace can improve inclusion and reduce sexual harassment in the workplace. The core way to do this is by working systemically and training employees on harassment. Employees should be held responsible for reducing harassment, reporting it when it happens, and supporting one another in all circumstances. A shift in cultural awareness is needed in all work environments to provide a safe and comfortable place for employees. Enforcing intersectionality within the work culture will encourage understanding and reduce sexual assault among women and the LGBTQ community. The #MeToo movement has been successful in raising awareness of sexual assault toward women in the workplace, but they need to continue to support the LGBTQ community, along with the narrative of speaking up and seeking justice.
