Poor Health Linked to Age Discrimination

Posted on

Cherry Hill employment lawyers represent individuals subjected to age discrimination.Age discrimination is a huge problem that many people face in their everyday lives. Individuals may face age discrimination while out at a restaurant, while receiving medical care, and even in the workplace. While this specific type of discrimination can have a negative impact on a person’s self-esteem, it may also have a negative impact on their physical health.

Longitudinal Study of Aging

An English Longitudinal Study of Aging from University College London shows that a quarter of people over the age of 50 are claiming that they have been treated unfairly due to their age. The study also shows that unfair treatment may be linked to poor health. Over six years, 7,500 people over the age of 50 were asked several questions about how they were treated in different situations.

The study showed that these people were also more likely to suffer from health complications. Of those that stated they had not recently experienced age discrimination, 13 percent had coronary heart disease, 12 percent battled depressive symptoms, 38 percent had arthritis, and 33 percent had a long-term condition.

Of the individuals who stated that they recently experienced age discrimination, that data rose. Seventeen percent had coronary heart disease, 19 percent reported depressive symptoms, 44 percent had arthritis, and 39 percent had a long-term condition. These findings show that age discrimination does not only affect a person’s mental health, it also affects their physical health.

Age Discrimination in the Workplace

Age discrimination is prohibited in the workplace. Employees over the age of 40 are protected by the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA). It protects people already working as well as people applying for employment. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) received close to 17,000 charges of employment discrimination in 2018. Age discrimination in the workplace includes:

  • An employer only hiring younger employees
  • Age-related remarks or insults
  • Getting turned down for a promotion
  • Being encouraged or forced to retire

If you were subjected to age discrimination in your place of work, you may have grounds for a lawsuit. However, the process can be complicated and lengthy. It is wise to consult an employment lawyer who can help with your case.
