South Jersey Employment Lawyers: Fox News Host Sues for Sexual Harassment

Posted on

Gretchen Carlson, a former host of the popular show “Fox & Friends,” and recent host of “The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson” on Fox News was fired on June 23, 2016 after 11 years with the network. Carlson filed a lawsuit claiming that Fox News CEO Roger Ailes fired her because she refused his advances. According to Ailes, she was terminated due to low ratings that were dragging down Fox’s afternoon lineup.

fox newsThe complaint filed by Carlson alleges a quid pro quo action, where she claims that she was terminated for not having relations with Ailes. In addition, the complaint alleges that Ailes called her a “man hater” who tried to “show up the boys.” He reportedly told her that had they had a sexual relationship, that she would be good and better.

Ms. Carlson has previously taken a stand on issues of sexual harassment, calling on people to stop blaming victims, and not to let sexual harassment hold women back in their careers. She has also advocated for mandatory sexual harassment training. Carlson notes that she has strived to empower women and girls throughout her career, and says that we need to stop thinking of sexual harassment as a women’s issue.

Sources are reporting that other women have come forward with claims of sexual harassment against Ailes. Most recently, popular Fox News personality Megyn Kelly also reports alleged unwanted sexual advances made to her by the CEO a decade ago.

Ailes responded strongly to the allegations, claiming that Ms. Carlson became aware that her career with Fox was over when the network failed to commence negotiations to renew her contract. He has called the lawsuit defamatory, and stated his intent to vigorously defend against it. Parent company 21 Century Fox has stated that it has full confidence in Mr. Ailes, but is taking the allegations seriously and is conducting an internal review of the matter.
