Three former Camden City Police Department officers have filed a lawsuit against the Camden County Police Department alleging racial and age discrimination. The former police officers said that they were passed over for employment in 2013 when the Camden County Police Department became the first regional police force in New Jersey. The lawsuit claims that all 153 police officers hired for the new force were younger and less experienced than the three plaintiffs, and primarily Caucasian.
All three of the police officers filing the lawsuit are over the age of 40, two of the officers are white and one of them is black. When the Camden City Police force was substituted with the Camden County Police force, the three claim that they were replaced by younger, inexperienced recruits, many of them still needing to go to the police academy for training. After years of service and multiple honors during their time with the city police, the plaintiffs allege that their age, and in one case their race, was what determined their fate.
Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is illegal for any employer to discriminate against an individual on the basis of age, race, religion, marital status, sex or national origin. In the lawsuit, the three ex-police officers are seeking front pay, benefits and compensatory damages. County police officials have stated that the claims are baseless and expect that they will be dismissed in federal court.
