Hotel Work and Sexual Harassment

A union that represents hotel workers recently issued a report about the state of sexual harassment in the hotel industry. After seeing the results, one of the union organizers who conducted the survey came to believe that indecent behavior by guests has almost become the normal atmosphere.
The union’s survey of nearly 500 hospitality industry workers in Illinois found that:
- 58 percent of hotel employees had been sexually harassed
- 77 percent of casino workers had been sexually harassed
- 49 percent of housekeepers said that a guest had opened the door naked, had exposed themselves, or had flashed them
Housekeepers may be especially vulnerable to sexual abuse on the job as they often work alone in hotel rooms.
Despite the prevalence of sexual harassment in the hotel industry, it is surprisingly under-reported. According to the survey, only 33 percent of workers reported harassment because they did not believe anything could be done about it. Others were embarrassed, or simply used to it.
