She received the award at a banquet held on June 27, which honored Ms. Vanguri and the other two finalists. This prestigious honor was bestowed on Ms. Vanguri largely because of her diligence in expanding transgender rights in the workplace through the landmark case, Blatt v. Cabela’s Retail, Inc.
The lawsuit cited allegations of discrimination in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Ms. Vanguri fought hard for her client, who claimed she experienced discrimination by her colleagues and superiors because of her gender identity, alleging they taunted her and forced her to use the men’s restroom despite her gender identification. Ms. Vanguri challenged the ruling in which the ADA excluded transgendered individuals from employment protection. Her efforts led to a significant step forward in the fight for LGBT rights in the workplace.
